Lory®

Lory® is the Mad Systems media delivery layer for accessible and personalized visitor communication. It enables venues to deliver synchronized audio, captions, translated content, sign language assets, and other media formats through personal devices and compatible hearing technologies - without forcing every visitor into the same delivery channel.

In practice, Lory® helps venues move beyond one-size-fits-all assistive systems toward a model in which accessibility, language, and delivery preference are treated as design requirements from the start. It runs as a synchronized parallel layer alongside the main show, adapting media format to each visitor's device, hearing technology, language, and need. For neurodivergent visitors, Lory® can deliver calm media versions with reduced audio intensity and no background music. It is as relevant to inclusion as it is to infrastructure modernization.

Why it matters

Accessibility as an Architectural Requirement

Most venue accessibility systems are add-ons: a loop system here, a captioning screen there, a rental device at the front desk. Lory® is designed differently. It routes the right media to the right person at the right moment through infrastructure that is already in place. The same QuickSilver® nodes that run the exhibit also run Lory®. The same show synchronization layer that controls the main presentation also triggers Lory® delivery. Accessibility is not a separate workflow - it is part of how the venue operates.

ListenAssist® streams high-quality audio directly to Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids and cochlear implants using standard protocols. No rental equipment, no separate devices, no charging management for the venue. Visitors hear exhibit audio through their own devices at individually controlled volume, without the signal degradation that induction loop systems introduce.
Captions and subtitles
Synchronized captions delivered to visitors' own smartphones. Precisely timed to the main show, not approximate or offset. Supports visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as those who prefer reading to listening.
Sign language video
Synchronized sign language video delivered to personal devices. Not a single universal sign language - Lory® delivers the visitor's own sign language where supported, respecting the linguistic diversity of Deaf communities.
30+ languages via personal devices
International visitors connect with what they already carry. No hardware to purchase, sanitize, charge, or manage. Content is delivered in the visitor's chosen language through their own earphones or headphones.
Neurodivergent-friendly modes
Calm media variants with reduced audio intensity, no sudden transitions, and no background music for visitors who benefit from a lower-stimulation experience. Configurable per exhibit and per visitor preference.
Braille pathway (roadmap)
Development path includes electronic Braille reader integration, extending the accessibility architecture to visitors with visual impairments. Designed as part of the roadmap from the start, not a future retrofit.

What it does

ListenAssist® delivers the exhibit audio stream directly into the visitor's hearing aid or cochlear implant processor using standard Bluetooth audio protocols. The signal arrives in the visitor's hearing device at individually adjustable volume, bypassing the room acoustics entirely. For visitors with hearing loss, this is a qualitatively different experience from any loop or FM system.

What it replaces

Induction loop systems, FM assistive listening devices, and rental handsets. Each of those requires physical infrastructure, charging management, device distribution and return logistics, and regular maintenance. ListenAssist® requires none of that. If a visitor's hearing aid is Bluetooth-compatible, the system works with what they already own.

Signal quality

Induction loops degrade with distance, introduce hum near electrical equipment, and are affected by loop shape and room geometry. Bluetooth direct streaming eliminates those variables. The signal received by the hearing aid is the exhibit audio signal, not a re-radiated version of it. Latency is managed within the Lory® synchronization layer to maintain precise alignment with the visual and main-channel audio content.

ADA and inclusion implications

ListenAssist® delivers a structurally equivalent experience to visitors with hearing loss, not a degraded alternative. The visitor does not have to identify themselves, request a device, manage rental hardware, or navigate a separate system. Accessibility is delivered through the same infrastructure that serves every other visitor. That distinction matters both for genuine inclusion and for compliance posture.

Deployment

Implementation Model

Lory® can be deployed as a standalone system or as part of the full AV++® stack. In standalone mode, it requires WiFi infrastructure, a show controller that can send synchronization triggers, and a content management workflow. In full AV++® mode, it runs on QuickSilver® nodes alongside Alice®, CheshireCat®, and TeaParty® - using shared infrastructure and a common synchronization architecture. Visitor devices connect via QR or NFC entry point. No app installation is required. Lory® serves visitors through the device browser.

No app install required
Visitors connect via a QR or NFC start point and access Lory® through their phone browser. No app store, no account creation, no configuration burden on the visitor.
Replaces inductive loop infrastructure
Lory® eliminates the need for single-channel inductive loop systems. No disruptive floor installation. No loop maintenance. Greater audio quality, more channels, and a far wider range of accessible delivery modes.
Show-synchronized delivery
Lory® content is synchronized to the main show at the presentation layer. What a visitor hears or reads on their device matches the timing of the exhibit precisely - not an approximation.
Works on existing WiFi
Lory® can operate on the venue's existing WiFi infrastructure where coverage is adequate. No specialized wireless hardware is required in most deployments. Venue WiFi assessment is part of the standard pre-deployment process.
Standalone or integrated
Lory® can be deployed independently as an accessibility and multilingual delivery layer, or as part of the full AV++® stack alongside Alice®, CheshireCat®, and QuickSilver®.
