THE NEXT CHAPTER OF MAD SYSTEMS

Introducing Mad.

Mad brings design, engineering, software and fabrication together to create working experiences and systems. Our new identity connects that work with an ambition that reaches beyond opening day: systems that keep working toward the designer’s intent as the world around them changes.

A NEW IDENTITY. A SHARED DIRECTION.

Design. Orchestrate. Inspire.

Mad. Design · Orchestrate · Inspire.

Since 1998, Mad Systems has turned creative ideas into experiences people can see, hear and interact with. Our work in museums, visitor centers and attractions has always brought us back to the same responsibility: make the technology serve the experience.

Mad brings our engineering, invention and project experience together around that purpose. From the first design conversation to the years after opening, we want an environment to keep delivering what its creators intended, with room to evolve as people’s needs change.

Our new name and logo give that direction a clear identity. Design • Orchestrate • Inspire connects the creative purpose with the engineering and collaboration that make it real. Architecture for Intelligent Environments describes the work ahead: places that can respond to their audiences and keep checking the experience they deliver.

START WITH THE PEOPLE IN THE ROOM

Every language deserves the whole story.

The Albert Robles Center for Water Education in Pico Rivera, California, shows this principle in practice. The entire center can switch between English and Spanish within seconds.

It became our first PixelsEverywhere™ installation. There are no fixed interpretive graphics in the visitor center. All text, everywhere, changes from one language to the other. There is no large English text with a smaller Spanish translation underneath. Each language has the same full presence throughout the center. That is what we call 100% language dignity.

Additional fully authored languages can receive the same complete treatment. The infrastructure makes that possible because language was part of the design from the beginning.

THE ENGINEERING BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE

A foundation that leaves room for change.

That approach runs through our project work: audio, video, projection, interactive software, physical interfaces, show control and the infrastructure connecting them. We design the systems, develop the software, integrate the equipment, commission the result and support its operation.

QuickSilver® gives this work a flexible computing foundation. By bringing AV functions onto standard computer hardware, it makes replacement, maintenance and future development more practical. The AV++® family builds on that foundation with multilingual storytelling, personalization, accessible media and tools for the people who operate the venue.

Now we are extending that thinking to a further question: how can the engineering continue after the engineering team leaves?

MAD INTELLIGENCE™

Patent pending

The designer’s intent should survive opening day.

A gallery gets busier. An exhibit moves. Content changes. Equipment is replaced. Each change can affect what people actually see, hear and experience, even when every device reports that it is working.

Mad Intelligence™ is our architecture for continuing engineering. It keeps the intended experience as an active requirement, connects that requirement to what the installation can achieve, and checks the result against it.

When the result falls short, that gap remains an engineering task. The architecture calls for the system to adapt where it has permission, verify whether the change worked, and identify what still needs a person, a maintenance visit or different equipment.

We are developing systems that carry this discipline into the life of the venue. For designers, the creative intention remains the reference. For operators, there is a clearer connection between what the system is doing and the experience it is meant to deliver.

How continuing engineering works

CONNECTED BY PURPOSE

Sound that serves the story.
Intelligence that knows its boundaries.

Mad Hatter™ makes intent audible.

A voice should belong to the character. A moving sound should follow the scene. Narration should remain clear where visitors listen. Hatter brings those creative requirements into the continuing engineering loop: author the soundscape, deliver it, verify the outcome and respond when conditions change.

Mad Presence™ brings head-tracked loudspeaker listening into Hatter, using two speakers per listener position. It already operates on the Mac, alongside supported headphone and earbud listening. Dedicated sensing nodes, Mad Nulling™ and connected personal-delivery work extend the development, with the proposed listening arrangement configured and tested for each venue. WorldModel™ gives action context.

An environment that responds to people needs to understand the situation and the limits of its authority. Whose preferences apply? What has a visitor agreed to? Which actions are permitted, and when should a person take over?

WorldModel™ provides an architecture for that shared context and governed action. Within Mad Intelligence, it helps define the conditions under which capabilities such as Hatter can act. QuickSilver provides a practical foundation for bringing the required capabilities into an installation.

BUILD WITH MAD

What should your environment still deliver ten years from now?

Bring us the story, the audience and the requirements that matter. We will help turn them into an experience and an engineering plan, from the first decisions to the life of the venue.
